Keynote: Reimagining Computer Science Education: Preparing Today’s Students for Tomorrow
Wednesday February 12, 2025 9:15am - 10:15am HST
With technology continuing to evolve rapidly, today’s students need foundational computer science knowledge to grapple with the complex questions they will undoubtedly face throughout their lives. The landscape of computer science education is also changing rapidly with more students participating than ever before. This session will explore the need to reimagine CS education to prepare all students for a world powered by computing.

Jake Koressel, K-12 Standards Project Manager for the Computer Science Teachers Association, will share a vision for a world where all students experience the quality CS education needed to become informed citizens and confident creators of content and digital tools. This includes:
  • Research efforts related to reimagining CS education,
  • Plans and progress for updating the CSTA K-12 standards to align with this vision,
  • Ways to get involved and be a part of the shift.
Key takeaways will include actionable insights for educators, administrators, and other members of the CS education community to expand CS education, promote equitable access, and prepare students for success no matter their interests or chosen career path.

Everyone Can Code
Wednesday February 12, 2025 10:20am - 11:20am HST
Join us for a  conversation about ways your school can provide students with opportunities to learn digital skills —  like coding and app development — to help prepare students for success in the workforce and beyond.

Learn about freely available Swift coding resources for teachers who want to engage students! Teachers who’ve used these resources will share their background and classroom experience, provide candid insight from their experience and share student engagement and outcomes.

Swift is used to build many of the world’s most popular apps. Today there are more than 850,000 apps written in Swift on the App Store. And when students learn Swift and SwiftUI they’re building skills that are used to create many of the apps you may use every day.

Lunch & Keynote: Belonging and Confidence: Supporting our Students and Teachers in Computer Science
Wednesday February 12, 2025 11:50am - 1:05pm HST
We have been working hard. And hopefully we've been working hard at the right things, the things that increase confidence in our students who are curious about and want to pursue computer science as a career path. As programs are developed and implemented, we should continuously ask ourselves if our students feel that they belong in computer science and if they are feeling confident. And because we know that teachers are important role models, we should concurrently ask ourselves if our teachers feel they belong and if they feel confident. Even if not in computer science, we as teachers are instrumental in encouraging and guiding students in their education and career aspirations.

Conversations About Code: Fostering Discussion in Your Computer Science Class
Wednesday February 12, 2025 2:15pm - 3:15pm HST
Having conversations with students about the code they are writing can be an invaluable tool for both the student and the teacher. Listening to a student’s thought process can give teachers insight into their problem-solving process and the blocks they may have. For students, learning to talk about their code and their process can lead to a deeper understanding of content, more independence in debugging, and more confidence in their coding. Starting with low-stakes conversations with their peers can give students the opportunity to practice talking about code. In this session, we will review several ways to facilitate student conversation surrounding computer programming to help your students articulate their thought processes and improve their coding and debugging skills.

Wednesday February 12, 2025 2:15pm - 3:15pm HST
In this hands-on session, participants will learn how coding apps and workforce skills are inherently connected. According to a CASEL report, 92 percent of businesses agree that soft skills are equally or more important than technical skills, specifically problem-solving and communication. Experiences like building a mobile app can actually help develop, enhance, and augment these skills. Using the six-step design thinking process, educators will build their own apps and learn how piquing interest in computer science starting as early as elementary school and expanding on that through middle and high school can lay the foundation for the vital and transferable skills students will need for their education careers and beyond. Please bring a laptop or a tablet for this session.
